How to start studying for the ARRT registry

Writer: Camille AllredCamille Allred

When I was a student, I had a lot of trouble sitting down to study for the registry. I could study for individual tests, but the amount of information I needed to master for the registry was overwhelming. I had no idea where to start.

If this sounds like you, I want you to know that you’re not alone! One of the most common problems I see in students is they just don’t know where to start. They use online test banks and try to just answer the questions over and over- which isn’t an effective way to study.

Here are my top tips when studying for the registry:

Take a mock exam.

Put your phone away, keep distractions to a minimum, and simulate the registry conditions as best as you can. Do not worry about your overall score- this is simply a baseline.

This is going to do a few things:

  • It’s going to give you a benchmark of where you are right now.

  • You’re going to find the topics and areas where you are weak.

  • It’s going to give you a map of where to start.

After you’ve finished your mock- review it! If you missed a question go back to your books and look up the answers. DO NOT JUST RELY ON THE EXPLANATIONS IN THE SOFTWARE. I recommend:

  • Writing out or explaining to a classmate or friend why the WRONG answers are wrong. This is going to require you to really understand the concept.

  • Once you understand why the wrong answers are wrong- write out why the right answer is right.

Having a map and a goal when you’re studying is important! It will allow you to feel like you’re accomplishing something and it will make your study sessions more effective- so you’re working smarter- not harder.
